Overview
Port Grimaud
Only a 20 minute drive to Saint Tropez, the canal town of Port Grimaud is a tourist destination in its own right. It wasn’t always this way.
Seated at the base of Golfe de Saint-Tropez, the port town looks like its been there for hundreds of years. In fact it was a marshland swamp up until the 1960’s when a young architect Francois Spoerry undertook to develop the area following the concepts of ‘Vernacular Architecture’ and ‘New Urbanism’ – revolutionary movements at the time. New construction would incorporate the local materials and architectural styles traditionally used in the region would be designed to promote walk-able neighbourhoods.
Building on the Mediterranean architecture Francois Spoerry built a canal and pedestrian town out of the marshland. Today Port-Grimaud consists of 2,400 housings and 2,000 moorings harmoniously distributed over 12 islands connected with 14 bridges, 16 porches, 7 km of canals, and 14 km piers. It is also an exceptional architecture which allows you to moor your boat directly in front of your living room.
On September 11th 2002, the lake city of Port Grimaud was registered as a masterpiece of the 20th Century patrimony by the Ministry of Culture. This distinction awards the unique and outstanding architecture of the city and preserves its original aspects for future generations.
